Stunt Roman

A refined yet playful Roman letterform with a cheerful and spirited character.

Stunt Roman

Introduced in the Speedball Textbook 1929, Ross George’s Stunt Roman is a refined yet playful Roman letterform with a cheerful and spirited characteristic. Stunt Roman uses the essential elements of formal roman caps and their corresponding minuscule letters.
You'll learn the characteristics and tools that contributed to the look of this hand. Randall demonstrates the unique alphabet using the Speedball C-4 and C-5 pens, sharing subtle pen manipulation and pressure and release techniques. The forms can be modified during the act of lettering depending on what comes before or after. Learning this style will teach invaluable skills that will translate towards lettering many other broad-edged styles.
The Stunt Roman course includes a full color multi-page pdf handout with myriad examples, and downloadable PDFs for all examples and alphabets demonstrated. The duration of this class is more than 2 hours.

Getting Started & Handouts

Stunt Roman includes a  color PDF with the exemplars for lowercase and capitals plus variations.  If you’re new to calligraphy, there is a section on materials, as well as some tips for filling your nib with ink. The materials needed are minimal: Speedball C-4 and C-5 nibs, a gridded pad, and a supply of a free-flowing ink (view Materials List).

Ross George's Stunt Roman

Introduced in the Speedball Textbook 1929 to the professional lettering community, Ross George’s Stunt Roman has wonderful potential for calligraphers today. We'll take a look at how this hand originated, the sources and influences that played a part in its look and style, and how it came into culture through the companies that developed into a digital font.

Lowercase Letters and Alternates

This section takes you through the basic letterform in the minuscule or lowercase letters. The alphabet is presented in letter groups so that you can practice with letters that have similar characteristics, followed by writing the full alphabet from A to Z. You’ll also learn about when and where to use alternate letterforms, so that you can adapt your letters in the course of writing words and sentences.

Stunt Roman Capitals

After a discussion about how the capitals were adapted to match the miniscules, Randall writes alphabet sentences and talks about putting all these forms together.
You'll learn about the adaptability of Stunt Roman, and the ability to not only vary your letterforms individually, but also the possibilities of unique letter combinations and overlapping forms that ultimately create a lively texture on the page.
